"I started this medication in the midst of a severe acid reflux flare-up after a very stressful event sent it off the rails. I was prescribed this in an emergency room when I couldn’t get in to see my family doctor - I took it for around 9 days, I believe. I noticed no difference in my reflux. I took this with prevacid, which had stopped working for me. Now, I have severe anxiety. I have panic disorder and PTSD. I noticed around day 7 or 8 that something felt a bit off, my anxiety was more on edge. I was and am still under a lot of stress from the reflux flare, so that may be entirely unrelated to the drug but it’s worth mentioning. I did realize after coming off of the famotidine that it absolutely made me a bit dizzy; it was very subtle and only really noticeable when it was gone. Not my cup of tea but worth a shot to see if it works for you. With insurance & a prescription, a month’s supply of 60 pills (20mg) was just under $10 so it’s very affordable to manage reflux."

"Diagnosed with GERD a few years ago. Also mild gastritis after gastroscopy. Started with Omeprazole but switched to Lansoprazole due to side effects. I have had a few flare ups in the past but recently got a bad one. GP gave me Famotidine 2xD. Within hours of taking the first dose (20mg), I started to feel sore in lower back. After the second dose, I was having sharp intermittent (every 1-5 minutes, lasting just seconds) sharp pains in my mid back. Maybe it is a coincidence but reading the comments here, it sounds like side effects can be quick to appear. Anyway, I have stopped taking it. It's been about 30 hours since the last dose but I still have the sharp pains. Anxiously waiting to see if the effect will subside or if it is something else to worry about."

"2/3 of users here, rate ranitidine very poor, most rarely 1 of 10 in effectiveness for GERD. I have 95% worst acid generation according to my Gastero Dr. , using acid meter down my throat. I get near zero help from this drug, do not understand, why anybody thinks it replaced ranitidine. Rate 0."

"took my first one yesterday, but by evening I was very hot, nauseous and weak. Woke up this morning not any better. Will not take any more famotidine. I will go back to Pantaprozole, at least I did not have any side effects from Pantaprozole."

"I used to be prescribed Ranitidine which worked incredibly well but I had to switch to this when they took Ranitidine off the market. As far as I'm concerned Famotidine might as well be a placebo. Actually no, you might get more relief from a placebo. How did this drug even get approved? It's laughably ineffective! I'm trying to heal from a duodenal ulcer in addition to having extremely painful acid reflux. Doctors recommend taking this in place of Ranitidine, saying the two medications are almost identical, but this doesn't even come close, it literally does nothing. I'm in so much pain. Don't waste your money on this garbage. It doesn't help at all! I even tried doubling the dose but the excruciating, burning, reflux pain was still as intense as ever. It was literally as if I had taken no medication at all. Don't bother with this medicine! Tums or Rolaids or even a glass of ginger ale would probably be more effective."

"My daughter got some strong GERD all day long couldn’t even sleep so her dr prescribed famotidine twice a day and it helped, it is just she is like a zombie now, she’s too calm and isn’t herself at all, has to think well when you ask a question and go over it many times asking her again til she answers. They said this medicine is being used for mental health because of the histamine being blocked. Schizophrenics have high histamine. So I guess it does work for that. Says is being used for schizophrenia, also she gets very bad headache, don’t know if will go away."

"My first night on it last night and I'm not sure. I woke up midnight with SEVERE PANIC ATTACK. I mean out of no where. Some numbness but that could be covid or anxieties. I don't like to jump to conclusions but my acid reflux burns now in my chest after I took the medication. I don't think I'll continue these meds. I had an acid attack after taking advil so I just hope the docs know what they say and are doing."

"OK. So I’ve used this over 2 periods I’d different ways. Originally, I was prescribed one tablet at night. This was effective, but by the day the acid reflux was back. It’s not listed on drug interactions, but it appears it react with anything over 25mg of pregabalin. I gave up and suffered for a few more months. A few weeks ago I decided to give it another go, starting with one tablet a day, also reducing Pregabalin. This time things were better. It was deeply unpleasant for 2 weeks, but went down to quite unpleasant as I got used to it. At this point I went up to 2 tablets a day, which caused stomach cramps for 3 days. After that, it’s been fine. I’m now used to Famotidine and I feel much better with the GERD. It’s not a perfect solution, you have to be prepared for your body rebelling against it, but 2 weeks of pain for ongoing relief is a trade off I think is worth it."

"I started taking it and didn’t have any problems for the first two days I have a really bad sleeping schedule and I didn’t any no sleep the third day and went to run some errands. My chest was really tight head felt kind of funky and then felt real bloated unfortunately I also have an enlarged liver due to gallbladder stones I don’t know if it’s from the medicine or if it’s because of what’s going on with me but I stopped taking it and will find an alternative"

"WE took another drug for GERD which was pulled off the market. We switched (two of us) to Famotidine but a generic, we were both within two days back to acid, nausea, and no relief. We then found the TEVA version and within two days of starting back on that, no symptoms, at all. I have to drive an hour to pick up the TEVA as no one near me carries it. It is 1/2 of the price of the other generic with my insurance and that helps pay for the gas. I went to an independent drug store to find this. Cannot say enough good things about the way this works. We take it with breakfast and dinner, 40 mg."

"First off let me say this medication is not for everyone. It's has helped me tremendously so far but my GERD is so bad that I'm puking from it and it feels like I'm having a heart attack whenever it's happening. The only side affect that I've had from taking the medication is feeling too full whenever I eat something. This is the 2nd day that I've taken it. Other then that I've been ok. Will do another update a couple of days later."

"I've been taking Famotidine for several years for GERD. It started with 40mg 2x daily, and after several months, I went to 2x 20mg. When taking 2x 20mg, I was splitting the 40mg pills, which are white with Z41 printed on them. They work well at reducing acid and got rid of my throat burning issues without any notable side effects, except maybe my anxiety was sometimes a little worse. Recently, the pharmacist didn't have the Z41 40mg pill and instead gave me a 20mg yellow coated pill with C 119 printed on them. These are terrible; it's like they're not even working at all, and my anxiety went through the roof (probably from all the acid reflux). I'm just curious how many negative reviews are based on this 20mg version. It's also curious that the C 119 20mg is now listed as Discontinued in the NDC directory. Steer clear from this one; get the Z41 40mg version if you can and split it for 20mg if that's the dose you're prescribed, or at least make sure it's another 20mg pill (Not C 119)."
